- Description
- China's ethnic minority communities are experiencing STIs and escalating HIV epidemics that are divers in socio-cultural dynamics. Many of the tribal groups and ethnic minorities reside in some of the poorest and most socially disadvantaged rural areas. Amongst these people there is not only widespread poverty that mitigates against the purchase of condoms, but also no tradition of condom use. Traditional sexual customs at collective practice level across communities in various tribal and ethnic groups have been greatly facilitated the vulnerability to epidemics. The aim of this research is to develop and test the effectiveness of an intervention program which will be transferable to a number of different cultural contexts among the ethnic groups of China. The program will use a small core of trained volunteers to spread safe-sex messages among their peers using oral communication based on role model stories/narratives with themes of improving knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions. A key feature of the program is to use local, tribal and ethnic languages, carried out and modified as required by the participants themselves, in an indirect, non-moralistic, style adapted to the local cultural tradition. The effectiveness of this program was examined in a crosscultural study of HIWAIDS prevention carried out in three contrasting cultural groups from Sichuan Province: a Yi ethnic minority group, an A-Ba Tibetan ethnic minority group, and a Han majority cultural group from the town of Yaan. The many differences in community languages and cultural traditions among these diverse Tibetan groups are a major barrier to their access to AIDS education.
